Renowned human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to “take the National Conference recommendations with him” when he leaves the presidential villa in Aso Rock.
Sani, a senator-elect representing the Kaduna Central senatorial district, made the statement during an interview he granted New York-based Sahara Reporters.
Last year, President Jonathan organized the National Conference to discuss some of the major challenges Nigeria has been facing. The exercise was reported to have cost over 11 billion naira.
Speaking during the interview, Sani said: “My personal opinion is when Jonathan is leaving the villa he should not forget to take the recommendations of that conference,” Sani said.
“It should be part of the loads taken to his own vehicle.”
The senator-elect said his party, the APC, opposes the document and he is not sure how they would deal with it.
Sani said the APC-led government should be honest when addressing fiscal matter and acknowledge the fact that “we don’t have as much money as we used to have.”
He argued that salaries and allowances of lawmakers should be reduced and made public.
“The payments made to legislature must be made public and it is what I intend to do. I intend to make mine public. This includes the office staff of legislatures.
“Everyone must make financial sacrifices from the president downward. If they don’t sacrifice their payments and allowances, then who will? Patriotism isn’t just for the poor,” Sani said.
Sani further added it is not right that senators and parliamentarians are paid hundreds of millions at a time when the crude oil price is falling.
Hmm so we still have good peeps like this. I remember back in the days of Reuben Abati who was a graet advocate fighting corruption. When he got into Aso rock his music changed.
