The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan today stated that her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan has to remain in office for eight years to complete his two terms, despite facing a tough opposition. The first lady made this statement in Benin, Edo State, during the Peoples Democratic Party women rally, under the auspices of Women for Change and Development Initiative. Women, drawn from different support groups across the state had turned out for event as early as 9am, waiting patiently for the arrival of the first lady. Security forces however whisked them away from the campaign ground.
Addressing the women, she said that the presidency had been occupied for eight years by other geopolitical zones and wondered why the South South should be denied the same opportunity, noting that her husband’s administration had performed creditably in most sectors especially transport and education, and that it was satisfactory by her assessment. Mrs. Jonathan applauded the Jonathan’s administration, stating that it was a gender sensitive government, which has prioritised women development through the appointment of several women in key positions, particularly in the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme and the YouWin initiative. She stressed that re-electing President Jonathan was an opportunity for Nigerian women to appreciate his good performance, adding that the opposition party cannot be depended on, emphasising that the APC had nothing to offer to Nigerians especially the women
